Today, Google announced the first beta of Android 16 - version BP22.250103.008 -, a major milestone in the journey of the next-generation mobile operating system. It's a step up from the recently launched Android 15 QPR2 Beta 3 and really shows how Google is at the forefront of innovation and adaptation.

Android 16 Beta Program Now Open

With this launch, owners of Google Pixel 6 and newer models can now register themselves for the beta program and receive OTA updates to try out the new features of Android 16. An official image download is also available for those who want to install manually.

Highlights of Android 16 Beta 1
1. Improved adaptability of applications across devices
Google aspires to revolutionize how apps work across devices:
  • Universal app compatibility: Android 16 removes screen orientation and size constraints; therefore, your apps can dynamically adapt orientations for any window size and aspect ratio.
  • Resizable windows for large screens: Apps targeting API level 36 will support resizing on screens above 600dp, which is targeted for foldables, tablets, and other large screen devices.
2. Real-time update features
  • A new real-time notification system that, like Apple's Dynamic Island, provides an intuitive display of important activities, such as ride hailing, food delivery, or navigation.
  • This feature enhances multitasking by keeping ongoing activities in sight and accessible.
3. Advanced Professional Video (APV) Codec
  • APV 422-10 introduces support for:
  • YUV 422 color sampling
  • 10-bit encoding
  • Target bitrate up to 2Gbps
  • This is a professional codec for creators that delivers uncompromising video quality and accuracy.
